What Is Aeration?

Technically speaking, areation is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve natural soil aeration. This is commonly called core aeration. This process helps make your lawn healthier and reduces its maintenance by improving air exchange, enhacing soil water uptake, improved fertilizer uptake, reduced water runoff, stronger turfgrass roots and reduced soil compaction. Clay soils should be aerated twice a year in the spring and fall, and sandy soils should be done once a year in either the spring or the fall.
